New Deck: The True Colors Tarot

True Colors Tarot by Sibelle

I don’t often review tarot decks but I was contacted by Sibelle, who is in the process of producing a new one, the True Colors Tarot. I took a look at her website and think that she deserves a bit of support. After all, there are never enough tarot decks, well not in my collection anyway.

As the cards haven’t reached the printing stage—you can help with that—it’s not possible to write a full review. You really have to get them in your hands, connect with them, and do a few readings to be able to give a full assessment. Nevertheless, I’ve had a good look at many of the cards and have to say, I like them.

The deck follows the traditional Rider-Waite imagery, so most readers will be able to work with them straight away. I’m not sure whether there will be a guide, but it would be unnecessary in my view.

The Fool from the True Colors Tarot

There are some interesting deviations from the usual depictions. I like the Fool, who swings from the moon, knowing she is perfectly safe while looking down at the World below. I get the feeling she will be happy to let go and float down to earth, landing in some random location and being sure the Universe will take care of her.

The Hierophant is shown as an owl sitting on a branch with a country church in the background. It reminds us that as the western world drifts away from organised religion, there is much relevant wisdom embedded in the Holy texts. And peace to be found in those places of worship.

The Hermit is rather lovely, too, a simply drawn figure superimposed on an outline of a human head. It shows that the work of the Hermit always takes place in the ‘headspace’.

I love the planets in the background of the Nine of Cups—we can’t see them all, but we know there are nine of them. Works well as a concept.

Here are a few words from the deck creator, Sibelle:

I was into drawing as a child and quit drawing for the longest time. I got interested in tarot decks (as well as in astrology, natural healing, crystals etc.) about 20 years ago and started buying decks and learning tarot. Although I am no tarot guru by any chance, I do understand the concept and their meanings and I have noticed that the cards speak to me very accurately.

I started this deck 2 years ago off and on, and just finished them not long ago.

I wanted to do most cards with a different concept and honestly, that was probably the longest process in the creation altogether. I didn’t want to repeat the same concepts that have been redrawn so many times and tried staying away from them as much as I could.

The images were hand-drawn with pencils then imported into Photoshop so I could play with the color intensities and textures. I wanted to include many textures and lots of vivid colors. For the longest time I could not come up with the name, but then just a week prior to completion, the name “true colors” came to me and I found it fitting. Often people mask themselves, pretending to be someone they are not, I was thinking about that and realized that the cards are always honest. What you see is what you get. And of course, the cards being very colorful I knew this is the perfect name for the deck.

As for the concepts, I read and studied the meanings of the cards from various blogs and tutorials to see various views on them, then I basically listened to my intuition and went with the first image that popped into my mind. I had the picture in my head and went with that. It was a good lesson for me to hear my intuition louder, that is still something I am actively working on.

I am planning to use Print Ninja for this project. I am planning to go with the coreless plus 350GSM card stock,(varnish/gloss) which is wonderfully thick and looks very sleek.  The cards will come in a tuck box (10pt Coated 1-Side Cardstock/Varnish/Gloss.”

So if you’d like to get this brand new and exciting deck in your hands, go along to the Kickstarter page. You won’t be charged until the pledges have reached the target amount.
