Three Spring Tarot Spreads

Find out what’s blossoming for you

Spring is definitely happening now, though I’ve had my doubts that it would ever arrive. To celebrate the temperature uptick in the northern hemisphere, here are three fun tarot reading spreads for you to try.

I designed them to be used for self readings, though I am sure you could adapt them to read for another person.

The example readings use the cute Fairy Tarot by Antonio Lupatelli. I’ve lost the LWB (Little White Book) so will apply the traditional Rider-Waite meanings while paying attention to the illustrations.

What’s Budding in my Life?

This is a four card spread, comprising two vertical cards, one above the other, then a horizontal, and finally another upright card. The idea is that it looks like a daffodil. Read from the bottom up.

  • Card one – roots: what holds me steady; my stability.
  • Card two – emerging stem: what I need to be aware of.
  • Card three – flower: what can I do to blossom?
  • Card four – scent: how do I attract good things into my life?

Example Reading

Spring Tarot Spread: What’s Budding?
  • Roots of stability – Eight of Hearts (Cups)
  • Emerging stem – Two of Hearts (Cups)
  • Flower – Knave of Bells (Page of Pentacles)
  • Scent – The Magician

The Eight of Hearts shows four young fairies and a mouse-like creature. They look as though they are having fun. The usual meaning of this card is turning away from a situation, so perhaps the fairy riding the mouse is about to leave the group. For me, the card means being true to myself and forging my path. This has always been important to me, so I guess this is fundamental to my stability.

The Two of Hearts indicates love will deepen or a new friendship will blossom this spring. I’m happy for either or both to happen.

The Knave of Bells is interested in all earthly matters. He is happiest exploring his surroundings, and he loves to know how things work. He looks a bit grumpy in this card, so maybe his gardening isn’t pleasing him. I shall look beyond my boundaries and explore all the possibilities open to me.

I love how the Magician turned up here. He shows me I have all the tools and necessary skills to attract all the good things I want. As long as I don’t attract too many insects this spring.

Sending out Shoots

A simple three-carder. One upright card, one horizontal and another upright. This spread is to help you build new connections with people, whether it be work, business or friendships. Read from left to right.

  • Card one – my current perspective.
  • Card two – how can I reach out?
  • Card three – who or what am I reaching out to?

Example Reading

Spring Tarot Spread: Sending Out Shoots
  • Current perspective – Nine of Hearts (Cups)
  • Reaching out – Six of Acorns (Wands)
  • Who or what – Five of Acorns (Wands)

The Nine of Hearts reflects where I am right now. I am happy with my life in every way, and like the little figure in the card, I spend most days on my own. I do like solitude, but sometimes I wonder if I should be a little more gregarious.

The Six of Acorns is illustrated by some knights in armor, jousting. They are riding various insects and one has been jousted right off his beetle and out of the frame. It looks to me as though the one riding the beetle in the foreground is about to slide off backwards too. This card tells me I should participate more often, even if I end up sliding off my beetle!

The Five of Acorns, in its usual guise as the Five of Wands, is usually about competition and petty squabbles. Here, it looks like one fairy is annoyed that another is attracting the attention of a beautiful princess fairy. Thinking about the Five of Wands, I think the card tells me to become more involved in groups or discussions. It actually makes sense, as a journalist recently contacted me about an online group that I run. I felt a definite resistance at the idea of being interviewed. Maybe I shall do it after all.

Playing in the Sun

This is a cute little two-card tarot spread. Lay them out in a V shape in front of you. Read the cards from left to right.

  • Card one – what shall I release today?
  • Card two – what will bring me joy today?

Example Reading

Spring Tarot Spread: Playing in the Sun
  • I will release – Eight of Leaves (Swords)
  • Joy – The Oread X (Wheel of Fortune)

The Eight of Leaves generally means feeling trapped by a situation of one’s own making. I’m not feeling like that at all. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. I can see a pattern in these three readings, that’s for sure. It’s time to pick my way out of my self-imposed solitude and mount the unicycle of fortune.

The Oread – ‘the spirit of fortune’ or in Greek mythology ‘a nymph who lives in the mountains’ – has her eyes closed, her head in the air and the breeze wafting up her skirt. Her destination isn’t important, but she is revelling in the way she is getting there. She may come a cropper on the way (as often happens with mixed fortunes) but she couldn’t care less. Thrilled that this card showed up in this position – joy on a unicycle!

I’ve had a lot of fun with these three short readings – and they have applied to my life in more ways than I expected, especially using this unusual deck. I think they are worth a more in-depth examination so will give them due consideration later in the day.

I hope you try them out and that they give you some things to think about this spring.
