Tarot Combinations that Might Show Deception in Relationships

The one thing which undermines a relationship or friendship more than anything else is a loss of trust. If you have ever caught your partner lying to you, then you know what I’m talking about. And it may not even be anything as serious as infidelity. My first marriage broke up because my ex lied about everything. For no reason. He seemed to think that he had to edit his life, my life, and our life together in order to appear… I don’t know. I never did work it out. Lying came as natural to him as breathing. I didn’t have tarot then, but I do now and the cards never lie.

There are certain combinations of cards that indicate deception is taking place. That truth has been sidestepped, exaggerated, or ignored completely.

One word of warning: these combinations of cards may turn up in answer to unrelated questions so don’t automatically assume deception or lying is taking place. Context is everything.

A note about reversals: I don’t use reversals because I have learned that each card holds the whole range of meaning from negative to positive. It’s down to the reader’s skill to bring out the correct interpretation. So I find there’s no need to limit myself with reversals.

The Magician and Two of Cups

Should this combination appear in a reading about a new relationship, your love interest wants you to see and know only what they choose. You are wildly attracted to them, but be aware they could be hiding their true persona. It’s an artful, well-practiced performance.

The Magician and Knight of Cups

Similar to the above. The Knight of Cups is all innocent romance, but coupled with the Magician he indicates all is not as it appears. He is adept giving you half-truths, which you cannot quite prove are outright lies. He’ll smile and shrug off any probing questions.

The Lovers and the Seven of Swords

There may be a third person in this relationship. Your lover may be married, or deceiving you and someone else. It’s also possible they have abandoned a previous relationship in a deceptive manner.

The Lovers and the Devil

Tarot of the New Vision Lovers and the Devil

If it’s possible to leave this relationship, then leave now. What you thought was security, is in fact, a deceptive trap. There could be co-dependency issues or other problems that weren’t brought to light early on.

The Devil and the Two of Cups

Tarot of the New Vision Devil and the Two of Cups

Similar to the above, but you are right at the beginning so watch out for red flags. This ‘perfect’ relationship is likely to be anything but. Once those warning signs show themselves, run. Don’t even begin to think that you can cure or solve this problem.

The Devil and the Seven of Cups

Tarot of the New Vision Devil and the Seven of Cups

This combination is both beguiling and deceptive. Your lover holds the promise of many good things. Whether they be tangible or intangible. You will find yourself effortlessly sliding into a situation which will entrap you like a honey-pot. Your control and autonomy will be taken away.

The High Priestess and the Three of Swords

Tarot of the New Vision High Priestess and Three of Swords

These two cards together may be a warning of communication problems. The High Priestess doesn’t say a lot, but she can be manipulative when combined with other cards. The Three of Swords is mostly connected with miscommunication so there maybe an element of gas lighting or misdirection taking place.

The Two of Swords and Eight of Swords

Tarot of the New Vision Two of Swords and Eight of Swords

This combo should jump right out at you. The person doing the deceiving is you… and it’s self-deception. You have trapped yourself into a corner, yet you are unwilling to admit your own contribution. It’s time to open your eyes and see what is really going on.

The Two of Pentacles and Six of Pentacles

Tarot of the New Vision Six of Pentacles and Two of Pentacles

This isn’t about the nasty kind of deception but instead someone is telling you they are okay but they aren’t. Or they are making a financial sacrifice they really can’t afford to make. If you can manage without their help then you must do so otherwise they are going to suffer because of their love for you.

The Moon and the Nine of Swords

Your subconscious knows you are being deceived, yet, on a conscious level you are unable to distinguish lies from truth. The Moon and the Nine of Swords indicate you are confused and wishing that what you want/told to believe is the truth. It isn’t. Wake up.

I’d love to know if you have certain tarot card combinations which set off alarm bells and indicate lies and deception.

The cards used for illustration purposes are from the Tarot of the New Vision deck and book set, published by Lo Scarabeo.
