Keep Records of Your Tarot Readings… & Everything Else

Keeping records tarotI’ve always kept records of my written readings. It’s important to me that I can refer to a previous reading as often the client will forget to give me their date of birth or I need to get a flow from one reading to the next, especially if they are close together.

That’s a fairly straightforward and easy thing to do. Just have a file on your PC, name your files, whether they be MS Word or NotePad documents, by the name of the client and the date… I use “Reading kathysmith 19082015”. I always put the word “Reading” first as I have an awful lot of other files too. I keep them all in a Tarot reading folder in DropBox.

However, you may have to keep copies of in-person readings too. I take photos of each spread I do – even in front of the client. They don’t mind if you explain why. Clients often like to record readings on their smartphone and I do too. The best place to keep these is in Evernote. If you haven’t come across Evernote before then go download a copy – it’s free. You can store anything, notes, photos, audio, video clips and even whole web pages. It’s synced to your account in the cloud and on any other device you link to it.

Evernote is free for the basic version, but do consider upgrading if you need to keep lots of records. There’s no actual limit on the amount you store but there is a limit on how much you can upload in one month. The current limit for the free account at the time of writing is 60MB per month. This is often quite adequate for most peoples’ needs. I have the Plus version which allows me 1GB per month – remember that’s not the total storage, just the monthly upload limit. I have had the Premium version in the past that gives 10GB but it was a bit over the top. You can switch back and fore as necessary. So if you want to upload a huge amount in one month, upgrade to Premium. Once the job is done, go back to Plus or even Free. You’ll only pay the increased amount for one month.

Notes are stored in Notebooks just as a document is stored in a folder. You can keep a Notebook for readings, another for your tarot journal and as many as you like for everything else – even your shopping lists can be kept in Evernote. One of Evernote’s strongest benefits is its powerful search options. These can be enhanced by using tags for each note. However, I find tags to be superfluous in most cases, apart from my ‘miscellaneous’ Notebook where I keep everything that doesn’t fit neatly into one of my designated Notebooks but YMMV.

There’s another level of organisation; ‘Stacks’. Stacks are simply collections of similar Notebooks, so ‘Tarot Readings’, Tarot Journal’ and ‘General Tarot Info’ all come under my ‘Tarot’ stack. I have another stack for ‘household’ and another for ‘writing’.

Not only should you keep records of readings, you should also keep records of any receipts – just in case you decide to turn your tarot reading skills into a business – books, computer equipment, website costs, travel expenses, etc. You can take photos or scans of all paper bills and neatly store them in Evernote. The Evernote App can handle this straight from your phone. Launch the app, point and click, then you have the option to tag and store the image in any of your notebooks.

You can also email notes directly to your Evernote account – imagine never losing a product key or accidentally deleting an Amazon order. All your stuff is kept safe and easily searchable.
