How Much Does a Tarot Card Reader Earn?

How much do tarot card readers earn?I see this question in my website search terms all the time, so thought I’d have a go at answering it. For sure there are many talented readers who make a good living at reading tarot. But for every one of those, there are hundreds of us lesser readers who earn a little here and there.

Let’s face it, to earn the big bucks, you have to be prepared to put in an awful lot of time and effort. For instance, you’d need to make a name for yourself – write the definitive tarot book, give talks, have a lively and informative website, guest blog, be a social media maven, garner an excellent reputation… and so on.

You won’t make a living offering readings on a website – most visitors are after free readings. I know this because I check my stats and Google’s keyword tool regularly. Some of those will convert into paid readings but it’s a relatively low number. There is also a lot of competition out there – there are so many good readers who combine their tarot skills with an ability to create and optimise a decent website.

You will make more money doing face to face readings and tarot parties. Your readings will need to be of a very high standard with a degree of accuracy. Otherwise, you may start off well, but word of mouth can work against you, as well as in your favour. Tarot readings are quite often emotional experiences for both reader and client. So be aware that one intense day or focused tarot party can wipe you out for days afterward.

Back to the question, how much does a tarot reader earn? Of course, this will vary from country to country, state to state. Based on where I live and average earnings per hour, I charge £20/$30 for an hour’s face-to-face and £100 for an evening tarot party. If you carried out 10 individual readings a week, then you’d earn £200 or $300. Not much really, considering you have to take into account other costs and tax as well. However, if you could work longer, see more clients and do more parties, then obviously that figure would be larger accordingly.

I know of other readers in London, who would not contemplate offering a reading for less than £50 or even £100. I couldn’t say if they are successful or not.

Another way to increase your earnings from tarot reading is to read at fairs and various events. You might even be lucky enough to live somewhere you can rent a space cheaply at a local market or similar. Then you can do many quick readings – say three cards readings for £5/$7. Ten of those an hour and you are making good money.
